Don't Trust Facebook?

Today, Mark Zuckerberg is meeting with some of the groups that organized the recent Facebook boycott. Muslim Advocates has been working to get anti-Muslim hate content off Facebook for nearly eight years and has repeatedly met with senior officials at the company including Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg. Our organization was a leading force pressuring the company to conduct a civil rights audit. Our executive director was also part of a group of civil rights leaders who met with Mark Zuckerberg at his home last fall. The following is a statement about Zuckerberg’s Tuesday meeting with civil rights leaders from Madihha Ahussain, Muslim Advocates’ special counsel for anti-Muslim bigotry:

“Without fundamental action to root out hate on Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg’s meeting with civil rights groups is just an empty ploy to survive yet another bad news cycle. Based on our many, many experiences with the company, we don’t expect to see any genuinely meaningful action or change so we will continue to do our part in holding the company accountable. Time and time again, Zuckerberg has reached out to the civil rights community only after a spate of bad news about how his platforms hurt communities of color. And time and time again, Zuckerberg says that he hears us and pledges to take steps to learn more about the problem in order to inform some possible, future action. Now that time is up. Mark Zuckerberg profits off of a platform that empowers white nationalists, permits hate speech and even contributes to genocide against Muslims. This has to end now.”
